£2m research project launched in Hull by MP for Hull West & Hessle & Secretary of State for Health, to help staff caring for people with dementia to use e-learning produced by eOrigen.com in partnership with ikonami

On Friday 19th September Rt  Hon Alan Johnson,  MP for Hull West & Hessle & Secretary of State for Health launched a £2million research project to help people with dementia and their carers. This exciting new project ‘Challenge Demcare’ is led by Professor Esme Moniz-Cook, consultant clinical psychologist at Humber Mental Health Teaching NHS Trust and honorary professor of clinical psychology and ageing at the University of Hull. The target audience will be made up mental health practitioners to help family carers and staff in care homes to provide a better quality of life for people with dementia and to reduce stress in family carers.

Funded by the National Institute for Health Research, the research will evaluate a web based training and decision support system designed by specialist physicians, pharmacists and psychologists.  The product is provided by ikonami and produced by eOrigen with state of the art interactive video/drama based scenarios to create an environment where mental health  practitioners can use real life situations in dementia care, to learn to ‘detect’ the cause of a person’s distress and provide support to alleviate this and thus overcome challenging behaviours in dementia.

eOrigen’s video based e-learning experience and innovation, combined with producing the award winning NHS NMP programme were key factors in being selected as the bespoke content developer to deliver this ground breaking e-learning solution, along with ikonami the lead partner. To date eOrigen has produced several web based multimedia e-learning projects for the NHS, where content development and specialist technology is delivering highly innovative e-learning programmes, setting new standards for training.

Professor Esme Moniz-Cook said ‘out of all the applicants, we selected the ikonami / eOrigen team because of their demonstrated excellence in knowledge, skills , experience and  interest in the subject matter, which is what we require to develop this innovative programme, with far reaching potential to help the growing numbers of  people with dementia and their carers in the UK. ’
